Viet Nam Feb. 2007 : Marcel and I have left Viet Nam- although I am not yet organized with my pics, the ones here will sufice. The country is fascinating in terms of history, people, and landscapes. Here are a few initial photos until I have time to put the rest on.

Tour Cambodia Jan. 2007 : Here are a few of the best photos we have gotten from traveling Cambodia. More to come later. Also, check out 2002mars.blogspot.com for more photos. Cambodia is awsome, more local than Thailand; by that I mean less developed. More dirt. More smiles. Less neon. Simpler. Cambodia is sort of like Uganda, but with significant differences. Same Same, but different as they would say here. There's much less lethargy here; village juice stops are cleaned and covered; theres a hop in their step even outside the city. You don't even get that within the cities in Africa! There is poverty, but there is not tribalism. Cambodia is 95% Khmer. A person from one side of the country can converse with one from the other side and although differences must arise, its not as wholly debilitating as in African countries. Its great to consider the differences and contrast this part of the world from the previous I have been in. I believe its healthy. I enjoy it. But I also miss home and feel a bit disconnected especially without a job right now...

Mombasa May 2006 : I finally got to see the Kenyan coast on an RnR trip to Mombasa the beginning of May, 2006. Although our plans to learn kiteboarding were dashed because of bad weather and then it rained hard for two days, we still had a great time when the sun finally came out. Mary Watson, Karen Daniels, Warren Cooper came from Lui, southern Sudan where they work in an SP hospital. I came from Uganda. Enjoy the few photos I got from the four days.

Murchison Falls, Uganda Easter April 2006 : This trip was similar to SP's trip a year and a half ago to the same park, with some marked differences. The people who came where totally different, and the things we did were totally different as well. View on to see more! Note that they photos are in no particular order.

Switzerland- March 2006 : Remember the rule: You view, you review- leave a nice comment, it makes me feel good about myself!

People I described this trip to before and after said it would be a trip of a lifetime. Getting a group of friends together from college and meeting people in Switzerland for a week of skiing and touring sounds like a something from a movie, not something that really comes together in real life! The Lord is good and he takes care of us! Ben Houck, Jessica Tabler, Mary Watson, Meagan Rowell, and myself all went to Appalachian State University together and graduated a few years ago. We decided to take a friends' casual offer to come visit her in Switzerland seriously and before Simone could say just kidding, we were at her apartment door in Wintertour, Switzerland (Schweiz actually the Swiss way to say it). For the next week, I had the most relaxing and incredible holiday since I started working in Africa three years ago. Besides the deep powder (Zurich recieved the most snowfall ever in the 73 years of recording snowfall!), hanging with good ol' friends, and making great new friends, the best part of the week was not having to organize and coordinate things- it was so nice to sit back and let somebody tell me what to do! Read on for more...!

Jinja, Uganda Dec 2005 : Over the Christmas holiday, I had time to drive an hour from Kampala to a popular destination in Uganda, Jinja. It is here that the supposed source of the Nile River is located as it comes from Lake Victoria, and there are several touristy things to do. Jan and I visited Bujagali Falls, a popular spot on the River Nile to sit and watch the rafters come through each day.

Queen Elizabeth National Park Nov. 2005 : For the 2005 Thanksgiving holiday this year, most of the SP staff in Uganda took a quick trip to visit South Western Uganda, especially Queen Elizabeth National Park. The park borders Democratic Republic of Congo and has the highest mountain range in Africa, the Rwenzoris as its backdrop, making it a fantiastic place to view wildlife and spend some time outside. We camped within the game park, falling asleep each night to the sounds of lions, hyenas, and hippos, and waking each morning to find hyena and hippo tracks within our campsite! Queen Elizabeth Park was at one time the premier place in East Africa to see big game, however, years of political instability has allowed most of the animals to be killed off for food or money. The bird population remains intact and with over 600 species in the park, claims the title of best birding in East Africa, and perhaps in all of Africa!

Kenya Safari May 05 : I decided I couldn't have spent so much time in East Africa without going to a world famous game reserve for a few days. Here's some photos of my time at Masi Maara Reserve in Western Kenya. After spending three days in the park, I can say without reservation that I prefer the game parks in Uganda with their fantastic scenery: mountains, lakes, rivers, green lands, oh, and they have all the animals too!

East Africa Tour Aug. 05 : After the wedding in Eritrea, I decided to spend time in countries I had not yet visited before. I enjoyed one day in Djibouti, two days in Ethiopia, and several days between Zambia and Zimbabwe around the magnificent Victoria Falls on the great Zambezi River.

Eritrea Wedding July 05 : At the end of my second year with SP, I was priviledged to visit the first county I worked in Africa, the intriguing country of Eritrea, to take part in a Canadian collegues' wedding to an Eritrean lady. As with most of life in Africa, the wedding was full of surprises and new experiences for all!

Let me say on account of my visits to different countries in Africa, Eritrea remains the one with the most appeal and heartache. Appeal because of the hardworking, independent nature of the Eritreans which is hard to find in most of subsaharan Africa, and heartache because of the debilitating political climate that traps the entire population as the country has teetered for years on the edge of war with Ethiopia.

A country that blends the best of Africa and Arab cultures, Eritrea is a country that can be cheered for as it begins to develop itself on its own, without outside help, and for this noble endeavor and its leaders we must pray.

It has been said before and I will attest to its truth, that the Tigrinians of Eritrea have, in fact, the most beautiful skin and features of any people on the planet!

Rwanda/Congo Dec. 04 : Over Christmas of 2004, myself and three friends hit Rwanda for a one week adventure in a place known for little more than its deep human suffering in the recent past. Rwanda is misty and green, its people are industrious and friendly, and the country is doing its best to pull away from a past that lives too close to the surface of people's living, thinking, and being. We were able to take a day trip to the Wild West of Africa- the Democratic Republic of Congo...

Murchison Falls, Uganda Nov. 2004 : SP Uganda took a big group trip over a year ago to, in my opinion, the best game park in Uganda. Murchison Falls National Park is named after the waterfall created by the Nile River as it is squeezed through a 6 meter gap, resulting in a masssive, raging, torrent of water that can be heard and felt for miles around. I have found these photos in the archives of SP-Lira's files, mostly taken by either Chris or Mark Toews.

Nile River Rafting/Jumping April 2004 : The Nile River flows from Lake Victoria in Uganda, joins the Blue Nile in Khartoum, Sudan and finishes on the Mediterranean shores of Egypt. A one day rafting trip on this 'high volume' river is full of adrenaline, fear, and water up the nose- perfect for a break off the job!

Mount Kilimanjaro July 03 : My first vacation in Africa ranks as perhaps the best so far; we wisked ourselves out of the Sudanese desert for a one week adventure on Africa's highest mountain. These pictures were all taken by Joel Kiser and I hope you can apreciate through them some of the joy, pain, and fun we had on one of God's greatest gifts- the mountain.

Three Year Favorites : Here's the photos I have running on my personal screen saver- either I consider it a favorite photo, or the subject enables me to ponder for a moment or two- a few even qualify under both. The photos compile my life over the last three few years, mostly the last one year since I purchased my digital camera- most are Africa since that has been my home for three years, some are from my visits back home. I hope you can enjoy them all!

Cycling in Africa : Some of my best times in Lira have been from the seat of a bicycle! Africa is basically one big bike trail and were it not for rebels and thugs and other people with guns and big sticks in the bush, I would be more able to enjoy all these trails. As it is, we stay close to the town and only venture south if we get an urge to venture.
